Not only is the exquisite quality of this series of works presented here comprehensively for the first time, they are also acknowledged as being central to his artistic output. The truly impressive nature of his large-format works goes without saying: their complex compositions, multifaceted, sequential motifs, and inherent power draw viewers physically and emotionally into a narrative, surreal visual world. But for von Kaufmann, the small works are no less significant. They are more than studies or notational asides to his monumental paintings. They reveal a painterly laboratory—motifs, color schemes, and atmospheres condensed into the most compact of spaces, which unleash an immediate and intimate radiant power. Ein Bilderbuch – ausschließlich mit kleinformatiger Malerei Ruprecht von Kaufmanns. Es macht nicht nur erstmalig die hohe Qualität dieser Werk- gruppe systematisch sichtbar, sondern würdigt sie auch als essenziellen Bestandteil seines künstlerischen Schaffens. Natürlich sind seine Großformate beeindruckend: komplex komponiert, vielschichtig in ihren Motivsequenzen und mit einer Wucht versehen, die den Betrachter körperlich wie emotional in eine erzählerisch- surreal aufgeladenen Bildwelt hineinzieht. Doch für von Kaufmann sind die kleinen Arbeiten nicht weniger bedeutsam. Sie sind mehr als Studien oder Randnotizen zu seinen monumentalen Gemälden.
